Skills Module 1 - Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet

SM1 Mandatory Individual Exercise

Each student should complete the SM1 Individual Exercise at the end of this document.

You should save your Excel file to your folder in Week05\SM1 before the end of this class.

Pivot table recap:

A Pivot Table allows you to group information in a spreadsheet by category, and display the information in a 3D chart.  It's a very useful spreadsheet feature for providing decision support, particularly for recurring structured decisions like payroll. This following two screens show a very brief demonstration of the creation of Pivot tables in Excel.

Skills Module 1 - Individual Exercise:

Using the spreadsheet: \Week05\Payroll.xls, generate some useful statistics for your boss: e.g. total pay for each employee after 4 weeks, average pay of the employees, etc. Create a calculated field to store the weekly pay for each employee (i.e. Hours_Worked multiplied by Pay_per_Hour), and generate more statistics. If you don't know what a calculated field is, or how it is created, you should use Excel's help system or an online Excel tutorial. Before the end of the class, save your file in your folder in \Week05\SM1.  The folder will be closed 5 minutes after the end of the class. Late submissions are not accepted.
